A Wave Less Surfed
Not as famous as the North and South Male Atolls, the Central Atolls have caught the eye of keen surfers seeking a break from the crowds. Thaa and Laamu Atolls in particular, are gaining popularity as surfers venture beyond the well-trodden paths. While the waves here may not compare to the size of the North Male Atolls the breaks provide consistent surf with perfect barrels. Abundant in medium-sized waves, the Central Atolls make for ideal conditions for brave-hearted, intermediate surfers. Popular spots at Thaa Atoll include Malik’s, Finnimas, Outside Mikado and Inside Mikado. Over at Laamu Atoll, spots like Ying Yang, Refugee’s Lefts and Refugee’s Rights are well known. These fast and sectioned waves deliver quick barrels that keep you on your toes. Many of the breaks in this region require specific conditions to truly shine, such as a strong southerly swell and favourable wind direction. But when the stars align, there’s no better place to surf, especially with the stunning, tranquil surroundings amplifying the experience.
